Freedom Illumination Project

A Venture in Community Engagement

Rich with history and symbolizing the freedoms, liberties, and justice we are all entitled to and being the tangible representation of the sacrifices and lives given to protect this country, the United States flag is a beacon of hope to many. This proposal is to further honor and respect the quintessential symbol of our country by providing proper and adequate overnight lighting to the United States flags flown within the city limits of Haverhill according to law and the United States Flag code 4 USC Chapter 1:
“It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when we desire a patriotic effect, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”
In addition, the United States flag code defines that proper illumination as:
“As a light specifically placed to illuminate the flag (preferred) or to have a light source sufficient to illuminate the flag, so it is recognizable as such by the casual observer.”
